On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The worst earthquake in over 200 years virtually destroyed much of the capital. Nations from around the world have sent assistance. The US sent the USS Comfort, the military, several federal search and rescue teams and the Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs). Many of you have inquired about the North Carolina and SMAT role in this disaster. Currently, no state assets have been requested. NDMS has been activated in Florida and Georgia to accept critically injured Haitian citizens, but North Carolina has yet to be activated. The entire state is preparing for a response just in case it is necessary.
